Metodología:

1.
imágenes, para luego responder a preguntas tales como: what is this? What do
you know about the planets? About the Earth?.
2.
Después de la lectura, pueden hacer preguntas como: do you think that there is life on anohter planet? do you believe in aliens?.

Is Venus similar to the Earth?
What is the surface of Venus made
of?
Is there life on Venus?
Read the text and find out.
Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is, after
the Moon, the most brilliant object in the night sky. Venus comes closer to the
Earth than any other planet. At closest approach it can pass within 42 million
kilometers of the Earth.
Venus is a near twin of the Earth in terms of size and
mass. Its diameter is about 12.103 km as compared to 12.742 km for the Earth;
and its mass is approximately 0.81 of the Earth’s mass.
The two planets, however, are very different from each
other in other respects. Venus is covered by clouds consist of particles of
sulphur and droplets of sulphuric acid. From the clouds falls a continuous acid
rain which is probably the most corrosive fluid in the solar system. On the
other hand, the Earth’s clouds are made of water.
The composition of Venus’ atmosphere is quite
different from that of the terrestrial atmosphere. Spacecraft measurements
indicate that the main constituent of this massive atmosphere is carbon dioxide,
more than 96%, while Earth’s is 0.03 carbon dioxide and 21% oxygen.
Venus has a surface temperature of about 460ºC. This
extreme temperature makes it unlikely for any kind of life to exist on its
surface. It is hot enough to destroy the complex organic compounds which are
the basis of Earth’s life. Life on Earth, however, is extremely varied and its
temperature is about 60ºC.
Another significant difference is the slow backward
rotation of Venus, one turn in about 243 Earth days. All of the planets revolve
around the Sun in the same directions, except Venus.
Studying the surface of Venus is a major problem.
Scientist hope spacecrafts will bring information to help determine the
geological history of our planetary neighbor and to answer some questions such
as: were there ever oceans on Venus? Are there active volcanoes? Why is Venus
so hot?
